Industry recognizes that transparency is an important way to build and maintain trust. The application of the code, including the appeal procedure, demonstrates the industry`s commitment to transparency, the obligation to report the participation of pharmaceutical companies in activities and materials, and the publication of detailed reports on cases reviewed under the Code. The industry`s global agreement to disclose certain clinical trial data is another example of the sector`s commitment to transparency. Companies must also publish summaries and results of non-interventionist studies, as well as the monetary value of certain aid to patient associations. Other transparency changes, effective in 2012 and 2013, included disclosure of the total fee paid to consultants for certain services and the total amount paid for sponsor participation in third-party meetings. As stated in the 2014 Code, from 2015, transparency in royalty advertising and sponsorship for health professionals and health organizations, including the designation of beneficiaries in many cases, will be strengthened. Data for 2015 will be announced in 2016. The ABPI code details the relationships with patient organizations in Article 27 and the additional information related to them, including a checklist covering the minimum requirements for the written agreement required when a patient organization cooperates with a pharmaceutical company. The agreement must be certified in accordance with point 14.3. These model agreements apply to health services in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales; they replace the 2011 country versions. The accompanying guidelines provide more general information, an overview of changes from the 2011 versions, and additional information on how models should be used and under what circumstances.

The Code has been regularly revised since its inception in 1958 and is established in consultation with the British Medical Association, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, the Royal College of Nursing, the Department of Health Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, the Competition and Markets Authority and the Serious Fraud Office.
